We’ve had some unseasonably cold weather lately, but today warmer temps were back, and I tossed on a skirt and a tank top and rode all over the neighborhood. It felt so, so good to be on my bike and breathing normally. The sun was hot. I can’t wait for summer. I love riding around in the intense heat and humidity. On my way back home I passed this open fire hydrant at Magazine Street and St. Mary’s. It added to the total realness of the summer-like day, so at first I was rather excited to see it. I imagined kids racing circles around it, cooling off in the gushing water. But there were no kids today–it wasn’t that hot. And besides, there’s no good reason to waste water like this. Have a public pool for public cooling–that’s a much better idea. After I snapped this picture, I was back on my bike, headed for home but stopping for a margarita and some football. I completely forgot about this open hydrant until I downloaded pictures from my camera tonight. I wonder if someone finally called some authority about this. I hope someone out there does more than just muse about whose problem it might be. I wonder if I’ll take a lesson from this blog entry. We’ll see.
Perhaps they were flushing the system? In our area any time a new set of lines is added or there is a breach in the system they have to flush the lines. Fire hydrants are how they do it. It does seem wasteful, especially if it is treated water.
