Today’s ride took me down to the Mississippi River to watch the sun go down over Jackson Square and the light change colors over the water. I started the ride without a plan and, I must admit, a little bit sad that I wasn’t riding around Austin. Sometimes I worry I’ve already seen everything there is to see on a bike ride in town. I want to have a new place to explore. But once I started pedaling my mood changed. It just felt good to be back on my bike. I headed downtown, but took a slightly different route, going around Annunciation Center Park on Chippewa. There I saw this building, at Chippewa and Orange, that used to house the Waterfront Employment Center for International Longshoremen’s Association Local 3000. I’ve ridden around this neighborhood hundreds of times but never noticed it. It seems sad, this faded, rusty promise of employment in this neighborhood that wears its economic depression right out in the open. One thing you can say about New Orleans, the place doesn’t hide its ugly. Yeah, it’s good to be home.
