Pink Azaleas on Louisiana Avenue

Yep, another beautiful spring-y day in New Orleans! School is back in session after spring break, and I was feeling remarkably chipper to be back on the commute. Thing is, folks, I love my job. I decided to take Rhoda up to school, slowly pedaling with a little music in my ears, trying to prepare myself for a rough class session. Today’s seminar was about the Abu Ghraib prison torture scandal and the ways sex, gender, sexuality, race, and nation are used in nationalist imperialist violent conquest. You know, the usual. As time wound down I could tell we all all wanted a redemptive moment, a way to make it ok to live in the world knowing what we know. I got nothing on this one, kids. And so we ended class and I got back on my bike and thought about how it is we get through days when we know so many ugly things about the logic of it all. Pedal, pedal, pedal, stop, snap photos of these remarkable pink azaleas wrapping around a house on Louisiana, pedal, pedal, pedal, pet cats, pedal, read, write, pedal, pedal, pedal, talk, pedal, endless azaleas everywhere. That’s how I did it today.
