Luckmore Finance at Baronne and Girod

Luckmore Finance at Baronne and GirodI rode my bike down to the Treme tonight for some TV with friends and then a stop at S.’s to meet her delightful friend T., in town for one night only. As I crossed Canal from University Place, I had a first-time experience as a biker in New Orleans. A car was turning right on to Burgundy and stopped short right in front of me. I had to pedal back hard (damn pedal breaks!) and then I just sat there, waiting for the car to move. It didn’t. The passenger then rolled down his window, and he and the driver–gasp–apologized! That simply never happens, drivers recognizing how their actions might affect cyclists and pedestrians. Three cheers for civility! Anyway, I rode home up Baronne, enjoying the cool(ish) night air. I don’t know how summer just disappeared, but we’re having more and more of these slightly cooler nights in a row. I had forgotten how much I enjoy biking in the fall. I stopped near Girod to take a picture of this sign for Luckmore Finance. I love this sign. I mean, look at that lucky clover with dollar signs on each of her four leaves! This is some seriously cheerful finance. These days, finance seems like a bad word. Financing, credit, debt–that’s a quick trip to trouble in a system set up to ensure most of us lose. But Luckmore puts the cheer back in finance! I kind of love the truth in the name: there’s a lot of luck involved in the money game. I’m not sure what this business does, but I’d totally want to get financed by them–they look fun.

  1. Wow, you lucked out with that coaster brake.

Have you considered adding a front brake to Rhoda? That’s what I did with Ariel, my three-speed coaster-brake bike. A front brake is also a good backup in case your chain ever slips off–there go your brakes if you’re relying only on a coaster brake.

Anyway, glad the driver apologized, and glad you are OK. I enjoy reading your blog here in Oakland, and looking at your lovely photos of New Orleans.

    • Are you the Cleaver of Cleaver Bikes and the you were the cutest kid in Moses Lake?
The one who built the super looking white bike with rack in Oakland?

      • Nope. Sorry, Nan–different Cleaver here. Do I have a doppelganger in Moses Lake? I’ve never set foot there (though my work has been displayed several times at the Moses Lake Museum and Art Center).

    • Oh, Cleaver, you are right. A front brake would be an excellent addition. I’ve actually had the chain pop off and get me in trouble here. Next month payday, it’s going on.

Thanks for your kind comments about my blog! I got to bike around Oakland this summer–lovely. Hope you are enjoying your rides.
