It’s about to get warm again in New Orleans, so I decided to take advantage of the cool afternoon and got on the new bike for a trip to Mid-City and Bayou St. John. I love the new bike. I love just letting loose and speeding along, legs spinning, elbows bending. It feels so, so free. Jack and I are in for a long life of rides together, methinks. I stopped at T. and R.’s for a bathroom break along the Bayou and enjoyed some homemade caraway cookies and coffee and then headed back out. I snapped this picture near Moss and Dumaine, but it doesn’t capture the look of the sky as the sun started to go down. The sky was streaked with pinkish clouds that seemed to be chasing down the distance. It was lovely. There’s worry that Bayou St. John is a danger to already flood-prone areas, and there’s some talk of filling it in to avoid storm surge from Lake Ponchartrain. I don’t know enough about the area to have much to say on the debate, but as someone who selfishly likes riding her bike around this town and loves the ducks and birds and geese and swans that wander the area and the sight of kayaks and canoes zipping through the city on water and dogs chasing each other, I hope we get to keep this bayou.
I wonder who bought the Old Spanish Custom House at Grand Route St. John. It was up for auction. I think the Corps was talking about filling in the entrance to the bayou at the lake so they could avoid having to deal with the floodgate, which is probably now below where the top of the levee will be. It’s funny how the local residents forced the city to build the high bridge on Lakeshore Drive years ago even though the bayou has been completely closed off, except for some underground pipes, at Robert E. Lee. I doubt a boat has ever gone under that bridge, especially considering the fact that the mouth of the bayou is so silted in that you can usually walk across it without getting your knees wet.
I love your blog….and your pics…and the idea behind it.
This is a pic right near my house in fact. 🙂
