Sunset on the Mississippi

Sunset on the MississippiOh yeah, it’s springtime in New Orleans.  Today was ridiculously beautiful.  I took advantage with a nice ride on the levee late this afternoon.  So many people were out riding around, running, walking dogs.  The folks with horses had them out, trotting around.  Other folks were engaging in archery practice, shooting on the banks of the Mississippi at hay bales draped with vinyl targets.  There were even golfers practicing chip shots.  This is what I love about public space–it’s for the public.  Which means all sorts of people do all sorts of things with that space.  For me, the levee is where I can just let go and fly, no worries about cars and potholes, no hills, sometimes some wind, but mostly it’s an easy ride.  I like the feel of crouching down and speeding through the space, nothing moving but my legs.  I like looking either direction to compare the different manifestations of human action, because, as this picture shows, there’s plenty going on on the “nature” side of the ride.  I took this picture because I liked the light.  I liked that I was watching the sun fall and that I would see it disappear, along with all the other people having all their own relationships with the river, the sunset, the fact of Friday evening.  It’s that way we are all alone together that I really enjoyed today.  Lovely.  And tomorrow promises to be just as nice.

  2. I need your help REALLY bad.

Where did you see people practicing archery? Can you just go by the Mississippi river in New Orleans and practice?

I’m desperate because I’m putting together a club but the nearest place is Honey Island Shoot range!! Please help!

    • Hi, Katie. I’m afraid I don’t know where those folks come from or when they generally practice. You might try contacting local colleges to see if they have archery teams. There really MUST be something around here. Good luck!
