Classroom at Tulane

Jack in the ClassroomToday is the one year anniversary of my blog.  I thought about marking the first anniversary–which matters only to me, of course–with a long blog about a long ride, maybe revisiting the first thing I saw while riding my bike around, that day.  But that’s not how my day turned out.  Instead I rode Jack down to S.’s house this morning so we could drive to Baton Rouge together for UNO Legislative Action Day.  When we got home, I had to race Uptown to make my evening class.  That ride took me from the Treme, through the Quarter and the CBD, then through Central City (I took Baronne) and Uptown to Tulane.  Five miles to see such different neighborhoods in such different stages of social and economic deterioration and recovery and decay.  I have loved this year of riding around the city.  I know the streets and the neighborhoods, I’ve seen things I never would have seen if I hadn’t just hopped on the bike to see what was out there.  I’ve met lots of other people who love bikes and love to write about them.  Check out the blogroll to the right over there–good stuff.  I got a good touring bike that will take me and my blog all over the place for a lifetime (she’s steel, baby).  I feel stronger, faster, and happier than I can remember.  I snapped this picture of Jack, lazing about during class, waiting for the commute home (tonight, in the rain).  Because my bikes are also all about plain old transportation; I ride everywhere–driving rarely even occurs to me.  A year in and I’m still digging this whole bike/blog thing.   Yeah, it’s working for me.
