I finished up some last-minute work on this semester’s syllabi yesterday and decided to spend the waning hours of my summer on my bike. It was surprisingly dry yesterday–N. said it was only 15% humidity–and the sky was blue, no thunderstorms threatening. Perfect. Continue reading

Contemporary Architecture at Seventh and Dryades
There’s nothing like a ride through Central City to sober a girl up. I took Dryades on my ride down to the Treme today. S. goes in for surgery at 5:00am tomorrow, and I thought it best to stay down here rather than bike down in the morning. Continue reading
Colorful House at Chestnut and Soniat
Part I of today’s ride took me Uptown for a long-overdue haircut and then over to N.’s house to show it off. I stopped to snap a picture of this house at Chestnut and Soniat because it just looked like a postcard, especially with that impressive palm tree cleverly posing to the side of the house. Continue reading
Houses Along Audubon Park in Uptown
I spent the day on my bicycle on a long task ride–a visit to the Registrar’s office, lunch with B., the bike shop for a new tube, the grocery for potatoes and other sundries, Human Resources to talk retirement plans. Yep, an exciting day for Rhoda and I! Continue reading
Metal House at Laurel and Austerlitz
I was tired today, but I couldn’t help taking the bike out for a quick ride. To a bike shop, of course. That’s what reading books about bikes at the bookstore up the street will get you. So I hopped on Jack and rode Uptown to meet up with K., who needed a new tire for her Surly Steamroller. Continue reading
House at Constance and Pleasant
It wasn’t much of a day for bike riding for me. I was just so, so tired today, and I think my legs were begging for a bit of a break. So I gave it to them, mostly, and just took the bike out to run a few errands. On my way back from the post box and to the grocery, I stopped to snap a picture of this house at the corner of Constance and Pleasant. Continue reading
Overgrown Lot and Decaying Fence at St. Philip and St. Claude
Today was hot and humid, a little reminder of what we’ll be in for as summer gets here. I love summertime in New Orleans, so I was happy to get out on a bike ride. I headed to Mid-City to meet up with a friend for a ride to the Bywater for lunch. I could feel the sun baking my back, and it sure was. I’ve got a bit of a sunburn, unfortunately. Continue reading
House on Stilts on Bayou St. John
It was an absolutely beautiful day today. I mean, look at that blue sky. I hopped on Jack and rode over to Mid-City to pick up some tickets to Wednesday’s Hornets game that I won in a drawing. The tickets are so, so good–seventh row, “premium club,” with concierge service, near center court. I am so excited, and so glad I bother filling out the raffle ticket at the Alternative Media Expo a few weeks ago! Continue reading
House at S. Saratoga and Foucher
Today looked so lovely, and it was, but the wind was heavy on my ride home from school. My legs are feeling tired lately, so I was taking it as easy as I could, pedaling lightly down Freret. It is always surprising how different a ride down Freret is from a ride down St. Charles. And they are only a few blocks away. Continue reading
Burned-Out House at 4th and S. Tonti
I had an hour this morning between work and more work, so I took the opportunity to hop on the new bike and tool around Broadmoor. Broadmoor took on a lot of water when the levees broke, and the neighborhoods in the area are only slowly coming back. Some streets have maybe one house that’s been redone on the block while other blocks look like nothing ever happened. The rebuilding here is incredibly uneven, as it is in most parts of town. Continue reading
