Today is my birthday, so I gave myself the gift of a ride along the Mississippi River levee. Continue reading
St. Claude
I spent this afternoon riding my bicycle down to the Quarter for coffee and beignets at Cafe du Monde, interested as I was in the tourist class on a Sunday afternoon. Continue reading
It’s Festival Time!
Today I rode my bike down to the Quarter for Vieux-to-Do, three festivals in one–the Creole Tomato Festival, the Louisiana Seafood Festival, and the Cajun Zydeco Festival. Continue reading
Making Movies in New Orleans
I rode my bike to the Uptown Zotz cafe today as I continue my project to photo document all the coffee shops in New Orleans. As I rode by Tulane’s main entrance on St. Charles, I saw these many trucks, lined up, blocking the extra space that I usually use when riding up this busy street. Continue reading
St. Louis #1
Today I rode my bike down to the Quarter and then walked over to the Treme neighborhood to visit St. Louis #1. My guidebook advises me to never go to this cemetery alone due to crime concerns and the hazardous surroundings. Continue reading
Abandoned couches in Central City
I rode through Central City on my way home from the gymnasium today, this time on Willow. Now, Willow is only a few blocks from St. Charles, but the difference in what these two streets look like couldn’t be more obscene. I rode by this house and its couch sitting on the curb and wondered where the couch came from. Is this a couch recently (or long ago but ignored) removed from a flooded home? Or is this just a couch on the street, as could be on any street in any city? Continue reading
Bicycles in the Rain
It has been really hot in New Orleans lately, but I love it. I used to think I didn’t like the heat, didn’t like the way there’s no way to cool down when it’s hot like that. I was wrong. Continue reading
A disappointing snoball
Today was a slow day for bike riding, but I managed two trips to my favorite coffee shop, Rue de la Course on Magazine, for lunch with S.D. and later coffee with S.B.. Following lunch with S.D., I wanted a snoball, as per usual. Continue reading
The Mississippi River Levee
This afternoon I took my bicycle for a ride along the Mississippi river levee. This is some of the highest ground in the city, and its flow is responsible for much of the shape and spatial organization of the city itself.
I live only two blocks from the river, but I could easily forget it is even there. Continue reading
The dead are everywhere
I ride my bike home from Tulane a lot. Today I rode back from the student gym, taking Willow through central city. It’s amazing how the city changes so fast, from the fancy mansions of the university area to the devastation of lower uptown. Then I took my right to head toward the river and came upon this cemetery, all overgrown and decaying, on Arabella near Langenstein’s. I’ve ridden by this place many times, and walked by as well, but have actually never been able to find it on purpose. Now I can.
