I don’t know if you’ve heard, but the Saints won the Super Bowl. The streets were quiet as I headed off to work this morning, but just being out there, I could still smell the good cheer in the air. My classes were sparsely attended, and the movie we watched was just about as much as I think any of us could take; celebrating is exhausting! Continue reading

Saints Fans Celebrating on Decatur Street
The Saints flipping won the Super Bowl. Everything’s gone crazy, in good ways. I woke up this morning already overwhelmed–parades, tailgating, the Saints in the Super Bowl–too much, really. I don’t yet have the coping skills necessary for that constant level of excitement. Cope by bike, I say. Continue reading
Voting Poll Sign at Austerlitz and Magazine
It was pretty much the perfect Saturday afternoon–sun shining, slight breeze, marching bands echoing all over. And it was election day! I hopped on the bike and zipped over to my old polling station where the Xavier Prep drumline was practicing, providing a festive soundtrack. Continue reading
Twirling Dolls Stalled at Lafayette Square
Oh yeah, it’s carnival time. I woke up this morning excited for parades. Oshun rolled tonight, and I was excited to get back in the parade swing of things. And excited to have clear skies for riding my bike. I started the bike day with a ride up to visit the library to pick up a book that I’m quite certain will change things. I love that kind of anticipation. But I’m not sure how much time I’ll have to read in the next week or two, because IT’S CARNIVAL TIME! Continue reading
Campaign Signs at Camp and Delachaise
It rained all day long today. It never seemed to quite get light out even. I was in the mood for a lazy bike ride going nowhere this afternoon, but alas, I ended up taking a drive in the rain. When S. called and asked if I’d like to join her and N. for pool up in my neighborhood, I was relieved to get to hop on the bike, even if only for half a mile. Continue reading
NOPD Reflective Barriers at Peniston and St. Charles
The air is filling with carnival, people. And so are the streets. The signs are everywhere, as I noticed when riding home from a great talk at Tulane. The mansions above Napoleon are dripping in decorations. The intersection at Napoleon and St. Charles is stacked with metal barriers. Fat Harry’s is draped in parade schedule. The synagogue is surrounded by a fence that’s keeping its viewing platform private. The “No Parking: Parade Route” signs that are up all year round suddenly make sense Continue reading
Graffiti at Magazine and Race
After a disappointing series of flat tires and a rainstorm yesterday, I was happy to hop back on the bike today for my regular commute. I then got a nice evening ride in as I headed over to Mid-City for another meeting with the Metro Bike Coalition. Continue reading
Do Not Enter Sign at Bayou St. John
S. texted me this morning, reporting she was in the mood for a bike ride. Ever happy to oblige such moods, I hopped on Rhoda (all decked out for Mardi Gras) and headed to Bayou St. John for a promised ride on Lafitte. Continue reading
Freeway Signs on the Broad Street Overpass
It’s Carnival time, people. I got up this morning and rode over to Mid-City to meet C. and P. for their annual bead-and-plush-throwapalooza, along with lots and lots of other people on this Saturday afternoon. I just got a few things. The checker asked me if I rode. Not in a parade, I said, but on my bike. Continue reading
Saints Gear For Sale at the Walgreens on Canal and Baronne
I’m not sure you’ve heard, but the Saints are going to the Super Bowl. It is impossible not to know this as you move around this city. I saw a woman in full on Saints game day gear, including the novelty sunglasses. I saw the owner of the diner by my house finishing up repainting its facade in black and gold. Continue reading
