Jackson Square Crowds at French Quarter Fest

Crowds at French Quarter FestThe weather reports promised thunderstorms today, but the sun was out, and despite a late night, I was up for another bike ride.  I rode down to the Quarter to see the crowds out for French Quarter Fest and hear a bit of music.  I, like lots of folks, can’t really afford Jazz Fest, so I really appreciate this free party.  I snapped this picture of the many people crowding in to Jackson Square, with the church and the Cabildo in the background.  Isn’t it beautiful?  Continue reading

Bikes on Lake Pontchartrain at the Tour de Lis

Tour de Lis on LakeshoreI didn’t ride a bicycle for three days in a row.  I can’t remember the last time that happened.  But I was on a trip to Kansas City for a conference, and didn’t bring my bike with me.  I rode the bus and walked, jealously eyeing cyclists as they sped up and down the hills on Main Street.  After a truly awful flight home (Houston, you’ve got some problems), the last thing I wanted to do was wake up at 6:30 in the morning for a group bike rideContinue reading

Overgrown Lot and Decaying Fence at St. Philip and St. Claude

Abandoned Doorway in the TremeToday was hot and humid, a little reminder of what we’ll be in for as summer gets here. I love summertime in New Orleans, so I was happy to get out on a bike ride. I headed to Mid-City to meet up with a friend for a ride to the Bywater for lunch. I could feel the sun baking my back, and it sure was. I’ve got a bit of a sunburn, unfortunately. Continue reading

Easter Shoppers at Winn-Dixie

Big Lines at the Winn DixieI had a great bike riding day yesterday.  I rode down to the Quarter to see one more panel at the PCA conference, back Uptown for drinks with friends, back down to the Bywater for wine with friends, to the Quarter for some dancing, and then back home.  I didn’t take any pictures, though.  I just rode.  It felt so good.  Today the winds were up and the weather was bad and the tornado warnings were on.  So naturally I went out on a bike ride.  Continue reading

My Bike at Cafe du Monde

Locking My Bike at Cafe du MondeMy sister is in town this week, and we are having a fantastic time.  But that does mean I haven’t been riding my bike as much.  So while she spent the day at the Pop Culture Association meetings, I took the chance to take Jack on a speedy ride to work.  It was a beautiful day in New Orleans, and it felt amazing to be back on the bike.  Continue reading

Abandoned Albertson’s at Jefferson Parkway and Tulane Ave.

Abandoned Albertson's at Jefferson Parkway and Tulane Ave.I got up this morning with a gleam in my eye. Because today, my dear friend K., picked up her new bike. And she wanted to spend the day riding all over town, stretching her legs and her new chain. Well, I’m certainly up for using my sunny Saturday afternoon like that, so I met her at the bike shop in the Quarter. Continue reading

House on Stilts on Bayou St. John

Stilt House on Bayou St. JohnIt was an absolutely beautiful day today.  I mean, look at that blue sky.  I hopped on Jack and rode over to Mid-City to pick up some tickets to Wednesday’s Hornets game that I won in a drawing.  The tickets are so, so good–seventh row, “premium club,” with concierge service, near center court.  I am so excited, and so glad I bother filling out the raffle ticket at the Alternative Media Expo a few weeks ago!  Continue reading

Flowered Vines on Decaying Garage at St. Claude and Piety

Flowers on Decaying Garage at St. Claude and PietyFor all the talk of thunderstorms yesterday, today was gray, dreary, and just a little bit wet.  But after waking up on the wrong side of the bed, I decided this afternoon demanded a bike ride.  So I kept my skirt on, grabbed Jack, clipped in, and rode off to meet a friend in the Marigny to do some reading.  Continue reading
