Broken Stoplight on St. Charles

I’m back from my trip to Oregon for Auntie L.’s memorial.  It was a really good trip, but it is good to be home and back on my bike.  Riding up St. Charles to work today I saw this stoplight, broken down and lying uselessly on the neutral ground.  Continue reading

Car Accident at Upperline and St. Charles

I had a very, very long day.  I was up early and working all day long and will spend my evening preparing to fly to Portland early tomorrow morning for Auntie L.’s funeral.  I’ve got no time or energy for anything other than what needs to be done right now, but fortunately I still get to ride my bike to work and back.  Continue reading

Loyola Men’s Basketball Team Photo

I rode my bike up and down St. Charles Avenue six times today, and it felt good to get out on the bike in spite of my cold.  On my way past Loyola and Tulane on trip number three I stopped to snap this picture of a photographer snapping that picture of the Loyola men’s basketball team.  Continue reading

Mural on Freret

I rode down Freret Street on my way home today.  This ride always reminds me of how uneven recovery and development is in this city.  Tulane’s campus is beautiful, of course, and Freret to Carrollton takes one by some really fancy homes.  Continue reading

Motorcycles on Tchoupitoulas

Yesterday’s bike accident, courtesy of the St. Charles streetcar and rain, meant that I had to do some bicycle repair today.  I managed to bend back my rear rim but needed N.’s allen wrench to get my handlebars back in shape.  Continue reading

Rain at Canal and Bourbon

I was all set to ride down to the Marigny for coffee and grading this afternoon when the rain started.  I don’t normally like to start a ride in the rain (thanks for the tip, pops!), but I just couldn’t wait.  Continue reading

Water Leak on Freret

The rain was coming down this afternoon, but that didn’t mean I was getting off my bike.  We just got back together, you know.  So I bought a $3 poncho from the bargain store and just rode around, running various errands and enjoying the cool weather.  Continue reading

One-Way Sign in Broadmoor

The weather is strangely cool in New Orleans today, which I like, and I enjoyed a non-task related ride around the Broadmoor neighborhood.  This neighborhood took on a lot of water when the levees broke after Katrina, and much of it remains in disarray.  Continue reading

St. Charles Mansion

As I was riding around today running various errands and smelling the hints of autumn on Ike’s final winds, I was thinking about how many recent representations of New Orleans have featured areas prone to flooding, neighborhoods still struggling to return after Katrina and from general poverty, and, of course, the French Quarter.  Continue reading

Downed Tree on Calhoun

The air was surprisingly cool tonight in New Orleans as I rode my bike home from the gym and coffee with C.  My ride to work this morning was hard, partly because I was tired but also because of the heat.  Continue reading
