Washing Machine at Soniat and Willow

Washer at Soniat and WillowI love New Orleans weather in January.  Yesterday it was windy and wet with a tornado warning.  Today it’s all sunny blue skies with just the right nip in the air.  I took Willow home today rather than St. Charles and was surprised by how much has actually changed in the last month.  Continue reading

House on Delachaise and S. Liberty

It’s a beautiful day in New Orleans.  I can’t believe how warm and sunny it can still be in November.  I zipped home from work this afternoon on Willow and then took a right onto Amelia to head toward the river.  I passed this house near the corner of Delachaise and South Liberty.  Continue reading

Bus Stop at Freret and Cadiz

Sometimes I really don’t understand the rebuilding priorities in this place.  There is so much to be done.  Just today on my ride home from work I passed a decaying house with missing doors exposing a moldy high chair, stacks of old newpapers, and a spare bike tire that particularly caught my eye.  Continue reading

Staircase at Baronne and Amelia

Today is a beautiful fall day in New Orleans.  In other words, it’s in the eighties and sunny, with clouds dotting the sky just enough to offer shade when you need it.  I rode my bike home from work today down Freret St. rather than St. Charles, and I’m glad I did.  Continue reading

Birds on Wires in the Marigny

I woke up this morning to a flat rear tire on my bike. That’s not a good way to begin the day, but I got a new tube this afternoon and took a long bike ride around town, from Uptown, through Central City to Broadmoor, over to the CBD, through the Quarter and then to the Marigny. Continue reading

Storms Brewing Over Freret

I left my house this afternoon without a plastic bag to protect my things, including an incredibly rare thing–a hardcover book–that didn’t fit in my bag.   This is never a good idea in New Orleans in the summertime.  Continue reading

Houses in Central City

I took a day off from riding my bike yesterday because my knees were begging me.  Fine, I told them.  Fine.  Continue reading

House Raising in Central City

I got a lot of riding done in 95 degree heat today. It felt so, so good. I was jetting through Central City on my way down to the Marigny when I saw this lot, vacant except for these stilts upon which a house will hopefully soon be perched. Continue reading

Abandoned couches in Central City

I rode through Central City on my way home from the gymnasium today, this time on Willow. Now, Willow is only a few blocks from St. Charles, but the difference in what these two streets look like couldn’t be more obscene. I rode by this house and its couch sitting on the curb and wondered where the couch came from. Is this a couch recently (or long ago but ignored) removed from a flooded home? Or is this just a couch on the street, as could be on any street in any city? Continue reading

The dead are everywhere

I ride my bike home from Tulane a lot. Today I rode back from the student gym, taking Willow through central city. It’s amazing how the city changes so fast, from the fancy mansions of the university area to the devastation of lower uptown. Then I took my right to head toward the river and came upon this cemetery, all overgrown and decaying, on Arabella near Langenstein’s. I’ve ridden by this place many times, and walked by as well, but have actually never been able to find it on purpose. Now I can.
