Today’s my last day in the Bay Area, and I spent the afternoon tooling around on the bicycle, running errands for S., who is still recovering from surgery. I went to the drug store, the grocery for flowers, and then the bakery. Oh, the bakery. Continue reading

Scraper Bikes at Lakeside Park
I’m in the Bay Area for a week visiting my dear friend S., who is recovering from major surgery. I was a bit nervous to be away from my bikes for that long, but thankfully S. has a bike, and she has graciously ceded it to me for the week during her many naptimes. Continue reading
Houses Along Audubon Park in Uptown
I spent the day on my bicycle on a long task ride–a visit to the Registrar’s office, lunch with B., the bike shop for a new tube, the grocery for potatoes and other sundries, Human Resources to talk retirement plans. Yep, an exciting day for Rhoda and I! Continue reading
Beer Pong at the Fly
My little sister is in town, and that has meant more driving than I’m used to, but also the chance to take my family on some of my favorite routes. I missed yesterday’s bicycle pub crawl (you know I wish I’d been there, Randy), but today I got to ride up Chestnut, around Audubon Park, and up on the Fly to see the Mississippi River. Continue reading
Decaying Building at Pontchartrain Beach
It was another seventy degree day in New Orleans, and I got up early enough to get a nice long ride in before my night class. Jack and I rode out Elysian Fields, because Googlemaps said there’d be an amusement park at the end. Continue reading
Annunciation Center Park at Race Street
The weather in New Orleans this week has been positively sick. I mean, check out the sky in this picture. Yep, that’s the color of the sky in late May in New Orleans. I took Jack out for a short ride this afternoon after a positively lovely day writing, reading, swimming, and yoga. Continue reading
Heron Nest Building in Audubon Park
I read myself to sleep last night with a bike repair book, so woke up with an urgent need to clean and maintain my bikes. Rhoda’s chain has been skipping a lot lately, and even the pedaling has felt off. So I treated her to a new chain, and she feels so, so much better. After riding to and from work I decided to meet K. to take Jack out for a spin on the levee. Continue reading
Jackson Square Crowds at French Quarter Fest
The weather reports promised thunderstorms today, but the sun was out, and despite a late night, I was up for another bike ride. I rode down to the Quarter to see the crowds out for French Quarter Fest and hear a bit of music. I, like lots of folks, can’t really afford Jazz Fest, so I really appreciate this free party. I snapped this picture of the many people crowding in to Jackson Square, with the church and the Cabildo in the background. Isn’t it beautiful? Continue reading
Bikes on Lake Pontchartrain at the Tour de Lis
I didn’t ride a bicycle for three days in a row. I can’t remember the last time that happened. But I was on a trip to Kansas City for a conference, and didn’t bring my bike with me. I rode the bus and walked, jealously eyeing cyclists as they sped up and down the hills on Main Street. After a truly awful flight home (Houston, you’ve got some problems), the last thing I wanted to do was wake up at 6:30 in the morning for a group bike ride. Continue reading
House on Stilts on Bayou St. John
It was an absolutely beautiful day today. I mean, look at that blue sky. I hopped on Jack and rode over to Mid-City to pick up some tickets to Wednesday’s Hornets game that I won in a drawing. The tickets are so, so good–seventh row, “premium club,” with concierge service, near center court. I am so excited, and so glad I bother filling out the raffle ticket at the Alternative Media Expo a few weeks ago! Continue reading
