Be The Change You Seek Mural at Baronne and Philip

Be The Change You Seek Mural at Baronne and FirstThis post really belongs on a blog titled What I Saw Pushing My Bike Around In The Rain Today. As I was leaving this morning to meet S. at the coffee shop in the Marigny I thought to myself, remember to grab the patch kit and pump. Wish I’d heeded that call, because on the way home I popped my front tire at Lee Circle. Continue reading

Hip Hop City Urban Wear at Baronne and MLK

Storefront at Baronne and MLKI was out late tonight, sipping whiskey on S.’s Treme balcony, listening to her recount her scary car accident of a couple days ago. I’m glad she’s ok and back home, but sad she won’t be able to ride a bike for awhile. Curses, broken hand! When I finally headed home I was very sleepy and in the mood to just ride. Continue reading

Parrot on a Wire at Erato and Oretha Castle Haley

Bird on a WireThe post office closed at 4:30. I got there at 4:39. That meant a ride down to the main post office on Loyola. I wasn’t quite in the mood for that little trip this afternoon, but the bike ride through Central City was surprisingly pleasant and the line at the post office–at 5:00pm, mind you–took less than fifteen minutes. Train Tracks and Ships on Chartres and Louisa

Train and Ship on the River in the BywaterToday was one of those perfect New Orleans Sundays, surprisingly cool and dry, blue sky, light breeze. It started with a lazy morning at home followed by a ride down to the Treme for brunch with friends, sipping champagne on the balcony in J. and S.’s newly-installed hammock. I lay there, staring up at the sky, listening to friends chatter and laugh, and felt damn lucky to be alive. Continue reading

Classroom at Tulane

Jack in the ClassroomToday is the one year anniversary of my blog.  I thought about marking the first anniversary–which matters only to me, of course–with a long blog about a long ride, maybe revisiting the first thing I saw while riding my bike around, that day.  But that’s not how my day turned out.  Continue reading

Decaying Building at Pontchartrain Beach

Decaying Building at Pontchartrain BeachIt was another seventy degree day in New Orleans, and I got up early enough to get a nice long ride in before my night class.  Jack and I rode out Elysian Fields, because Googlemaps said there’d be an amusement park at the end.  Continue reading

House at S. Saratoga and Foucher

House at S. Saratoga and FoucherToday looked so lovely, and it was, but the wind was heavy on my ride home from school.  My legs are feeling tired lately, so I was taking it as easy as I could, pedaling lightly down Freret.  It is always surprising how different a ride down Freret is from a ride down St. Charles.  And they are only a few blocks away.  Continue reading

Super Sunday Crowds at Taylor Park

Super Sunday CrowdToday was Super Sunday–the day when all the Mardi Gras Indian tribes parade together–rescheduled after last weekend’s rainout.  The weather was perfect today–sunny and warm, with occasional clouds to cool us off.  I rode my bike toward Taylor Park and just followed the crowds.  And man, there were a lot of people.  Continue reading

Decaying Car at S. Liberty and Valmont

Broken Down CarIt was a lovely, crisp day in New Orleans today–blue sky, sunny, slight breeze.  I decided to take Freret home from work, but was stymied by a rare event: a bicycle traffic jam.  There were enough bikes on Freret slowing my easy traffic that I went ahead and took South Liberty.  It felt good to be on a different street, sailing along, noticing new houses and new stray cats and new downed trees.  Continue reading

Think That You Might Be Wrong Sign at 7th and La Salle

Think That You Might Be WrongToday was crisp and cold and the sky was this beautiful blue.  I rode home on Freret and then turned on La Salle.  I stopped to take a picture of this sign, which reads “Think That You Might Be Wrong.”  I’ve seen these signs all over town, but I don’t know who put them up, or why.  Continue reading
