Today was hot and humid, a little reminder of what we’ll be in for as summer gets here. I love summertime in New Orleans, so I was happy to get out on a bike ride. I headed to Mid-City to meet up with a friend for a ride to the Bywater for lunch. I could feel the sun baking my back, and it sure was. I’ve got a bit of a sunburn, unfortunately. Continue reading
Easter Shoppers at Winn-Dixie
I had a great bike riding day yesterday. I rode down to the Quarter to see one more panel at the PCA conference, back Uptown for drinks with friends, back down to the Bywater for wine with friends, to the Quarter for some dancing, and then back home. I didn’t take any pictures, though. I just rode. It felt so good. Today the winds were up and the weather was bad and the tornado warnings were on. So naturally I went out on a bike ride. Continue reading
My Bike at Cafe du Monde
My sister is in town this week, and we are having a fantastic time. But that does mean I haven’t been riding my bike as much. So while she spent the day at the Pop Culture Association meetings, I took the chance to take Jack on a speedy ride to work. It was a beautiful day in New Orleans, and it felt amazing to be back on the bike. Continue reading
Abandoned Albertson’s at Jefferson Parkway and Tulane Ave.
I got up this morning with a gleam in my eye. Because today, my dear friend K., picked up her new bike. And she wanted to spend the day riding all over town, stretching her legs and her new chain. Well, I’m certainly up for using my sunny Saturday afternoon like that, so I met her at the bike shop in the Quarter. Continue reading
House on Stilts on Bayou St. John
It was an absolutely beautiful day today. I mean, look at that blue sky. I hopped on Jack and rode over to Mid-City to pick up some tickets to Wednesday’s Hornets game that I won in a drawing. The tickets are so, so good–seventh row, “premium club,” with concierge service, near center court. I am so excited, and so glad I bother filling out the raffle ticket at the Alternative Media Expo a few weeks ago! Continue reading
Flowered Vines on Decaying Garage at St. Claude and Piety
For all the talk of thunderstorms yesterday, today was gray, dreary, and just a little bit wet. But after waking up on the wrong side of the bed, I decided this afternoon demanded a bike ride. So I kept my skirt on, grabbed Jack, clipped in, and rode off to meet a friend in the Marigny to do some reading. Continue reading
PJ’s Roastery on Chartres
The weather predictors promised thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, but fortunately, upon checking the radar, I saw that I had a window of opportunity for a nice bike ride this evening. The rain is pouring down as I write this, but it was warm and muggy and perfect when I headed out. I took Jack, and went clipless, because I’ve got to get over the little niggling fear I have of being stuck to my bike. Continue reading
House at S. Saratoga and Foucher
Today looked so lovely, and it was, but the wind was heavy on my ride home from school. My legs are feeling tired lately, so I was taking it as easy as I could, pedaling lightly down Freret. It is always surprising how different a ride down Freret is from a ride down St. Charles. And they are only a few blocks away. Continue reading
Church at Jackson and St. Charles
I’m continually struck by how quickly I adjust my sight and see only what I expect to see. One of the reasons I do this blog is to force myself to look, really look, at what I pass as I ride my bicycle around town. Being on a bicycle completely changes your relationship to the road, to your surrounding, to fellow travelers by foot, bike, motorcycle, car, horse-drawn carriage, bus, streetcar, and all the other ways we get around. Continue reading
Blackout at Decatur and Iberville
Last night’s storms were crazy. The sky was bright with lightening and the rain just poured down, coming dangerously close to my door. I watched the storm, and storm coverage, and finally went to sleep. So when I was invited out and about tonight, I was frankly a little bit nervous, since the weather reports promised similar storms tonight. I finally decided to head out on the bike with an extra pair of shoes and raincoat. I mean, I can get wet, and my bike has certainly seen its share of showers. Continue reading
