Oh, the weather this weekend was simply perfect. Sunny and warm, cool evenings, flowers on the air. Saturday, though, gave us some afternoon showers and left a mist that didn’t lift. After another early morning ride to ACLA and a stop for croissants in the Quarter, I rode over to Bayou St. John to try out a kayak. Continue reading

Remnants Of An Old Drugstore at St. Bernard and Broad
I had one of those days where I woke up a little grumpy and it just got worse as lots of little irritations and annoyances added up. The only answer was, of course, a long bike ride in the sun under a frighteningly blue sky. I zeroed out my inbox (nothing prettier than an empty inbox!) and hopped on the Surly for a ride. Continue reading
Do Not Enter Sign at Bayou St. John
S. texted me this morning, reporting she was in the mood for a bike ride. Ever happy to oblige such moods, I hopped on Rhoda (all decked out for Mardi Gras) and headed to Bayou St. John for a promised ride on Lafitte. Continue reading
Sailboats on Lake Pontchartrain
I woke up this morning well-rested and happy to see the sun shining and to have nothing on my plate, so I spent the day taking Rhoda out for a ride around town. I was in the mood to see water, so headed to Bayou St. John and then, after putting on some music, rode around City Park and then up to Lake Pontchartrain to check out the view. Continue reading
Abandoned City Hall Annex at Canal and Tonti
I was tired after a long day, but I couldn’t let this first cool(ish) evening go without getting out for a ride on the Surly. It was positively lovely out there. I headed over to Canal and rode over and along Bayou St. John, where lots of folks were out enjoying the cooler and drier air. Continue reading
Lanterns on the Pedestrian Bridge at Bayou St. John
I don’t know what to write today. I barely knew what to see today. It’s the fourth anniversary of Katrina, and I am acutely aware that I wasn’t here then. I was living in Hartford, Connecticut, trying to finish my dissertation, missing California, and hating the uncomfortable broken-down office furniture the college had moved into our furnished apartment. I wished I was home. Continue reading
Popeye’s at Claiborne and Milan
I left my house around 2:00 this afternoon, clipped in to my bike and hoping to run in to trouble somewhere. That’s my idea of a perfect Saturday afternoon. I started by tooling over to 4238 Claiborne, where I snapped this photo of Popeye’s. Continue reading
Abandoned Motel at Tulane and S. Galvez
Today’s ride took me Uptown and over to Mid-City via Carrollton to meet K. and M. for coffee and work. The ride was tiring because of the intense humidity. I mean, my glasses were fogging up as I pedaled over the bayou. Continue reading
Decaying Building at Pontchartrain Beach
It was another seventy degree day in New Orleans, and I got up early enough to get a nice long ride in before my night class. Jack and I rode out Elysian Fields, because Googlemaps said there’d be an amusement park at the end. Continue reading
Sky Above Lake Pontchartrain
Today is my 200th blog post. That’s a lot of writing, and a lot of riding, my bike around, every day. Today’s ride took me through so many different parts of New Orleans. Continue reading
