Today I rode down to the Marigny for breakfast with a friend, with the plan to get some writing done over coffee afterward. My good buddy S. called from Mississippi with bad news–she’d been in a car accident (don’t worry–everybody’s ok, including the dog)–and that put a crimp in my plan. Continue reading

Streetcar Tracks At Lee Circle
The weather seems strangely cool these days, but a few spins on the cycle and I’m reminded how humid it is. Today I rode around Uptown, meeting friends for lunch and then an afternoon beer and pool. Continue reading
Oak Tree Roots on St. Charles
Today’s bike ride took me to yoga class. Jack’s big panniers easily carried yoga clothes, mat and towel, along with a book, locks, patch kit and pump, and leftover crap from past rides. This bike is seriously good for travel. Continue reading
Pothole Repair at Magazine and Philip
Today was a good day on my bike. Yesterday felt a bit sluggish, and I felt a bit lazy. But today’s ride was one of those rides that make me feel like a little kid, racing along on my bicycle, skirt flying. Continue reading
Tall Grass at Rayne Memorial Church
I was out of town for a few days, in the beautiful Mississippi delta, where I didn’t bike. Or walk. Or do much of anything other than float aimlessly in a pool in the middle of nowhere. It was lovely, but I was happy to get back home and back to work. And back to my bike. Continue reading
Chinese Takeout on Magazine
I rode my bike to work today with a lot on my mind, so I wasn’t seeing much but the traffic around me as I zipped up St. Charles. Today’s class was about sexual violence. This is always a tough class because so many of us have such intimate experiences of violence. Continue reading
Filled Pothole at Delachaise and St. Charles
I took an easy ride to and from work today and noticed that a day or two off from heavy riding sure makes my knees feel better. But enough about that. On my way home I snapped this picture of the street at Delachaise and St. Charles. The pothole is gone. Continue reading
Rain at St. Charles and Milan
Yeah, summer in New Orleans means water, lots and lots of water. The air is thick with it almost all the time, and the skies can open up at any time and let down a torrent. Continue reading
My Bike at Cafe du Monde
My sister is in town this week, and we are having a fantastic time. But that does mean I haven’t been riding my bike as much. So while she spent the day at the Pop Culture Association meetings, I took the chance to take Jack on a speedy ride to work. It was a beautiful day in New Orleans, and it felt amazing to be back on the bike. Continue reading
Church at Jackson and St. Charles
I’m continually struck by how quickly I adjust my sight and see only what I expect to see. One of the reasons I do this blog is to force myself to look, really look, at what I pass as I ride my bicycle around town. Being on a bicycle completely changes your relationship to the road, to your surrounding, to fellow travelers by foot, bike, motorcycle, car, horse-drawn carriage, bus, streetcar, and all the other ways we get around. Continue reading
