It rained all day long today. It never seemed to quite get light out even. I was in the mood for a lazy bike ride going nowhere this afternoon, but alas, I ended up taking a drive in the rain. When S. called and asked if I’d like to join her and N. for pool up in my neighborhood, I was relieved to get to hop on the bike, even if only for half a mile. Continue reading
Uptown
Graffiti at Magazine and Race
After a disappointing series of flat tires and a rainstorm yesterday, I was happy to hop back on the bike today for my regular commute. I then got a nice evening ride in as I headed over to Mid-City for another meeting with the Metro Bike Coalition. Continue reading
Desk Chair Locked to a Traffic Pole at Freret and Napoleon
Well, it’s the day after the NFC Championship Game, and everybody’s still in their black and gold. I rode up to campus expecting an empty classroom at 9:30, but lo and behold, there they were, putting the desks in a circle and ready to talk about the gender politics of their Saints viewing parties. Continue reading
Frat Boys On Their Porch on Broadway
Yep, it was another beautiful day in New Orleans, and my bike took me up to campus to meet a friend for lunch. I was feeling a touch under the weather today, maybe from not enough sleep and too many weather changes, so the ride didn’t feel as good as yesterday. Continue reading
Steps On An Empty Lot at Freret and Napoleon
Oh, the weather is warming up, and it is simply delightful. A week of sub-freezing temps is about all I can take. I had a zippy ride to school up St. Charles to meet my seminar students. I arrived a bit out of breath, donning my grown up clothes (right leg rolled up) and my bike shoes, still riding yesterday’s first-day-of-school high. Continue reading
Tree Growing Out of the Sidewalk at Magazine and Toledano
I don’t know if you’ve heard, but it’s really cold in New Orleans right now. It is much, much colder than I can remember it being since I moved here, and I don’t exactly know how to ride a bike in this weather. I know, I know, you just ride, but how do you stay warm? I realized today that I don’t even really have a decent coat. Continue reading
Beignet Debris at Cafe du Monde
I’m not usually a big fan of New Year’s Eve. It’s too much mandatory drinking and fun and dancing, and I like to be in charge of those things myself, no matter what the calendar says. But I headed out on my bike this evening, hell-bent on making a go of it this year. And man, did I have a good time. Continue reading
Oak Tree and Toilet on Octavia and Chestnut
Oh, it was a beautiful day. Ok, not in terms of weather; we had yet another rainstorm that meant cold and wet riding. But it was beautiful in that way a day is beautiful when you have nothing pressing to do except breathe it in. I rode down to meet a friend for brunch, and then I rode back Uptown for a haircut. I stopped to snap this picture on Octavia and Chestnut. I just love this tree. Oak trees in New Orleans just aren’t like other trees. They are outrageous. Continue reading
Sunflowers in a Vacant Lot at Seventh and Laurel
I flew back into New Orleans last night after a quick jaunt to Boise, Idaho to see the parents, and it feels good to be home. I was way too tired to take the bike out yesterday, so I was especially excited to take Rhoda out for a quick spin. We didn’t ride far due to other plans involving a car, but riding around Uptown was a great reminder that I live in a beautiful place and that yes, I love riding bikes–just a couple pedals and I’m back in myself. Continue reading
Fortissimo The Food Emporium at Louisiana and St. Charles
I went out of town for a few days to the lovely Mississippi delta with a friend, which meant no bike riding for a couple of days. I had such a lovely time out in the middle of nowhere, though. The highlight was definitely the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center; I haven’t learned that much from a museum in a long, long time. Continue reading
