Saints Fans Celebrating on Decatur Street

The Saints flipping won the Super Bowl. Everything’s gone crazy, in good ways. I woke up this morning already overwhelmed–parades, tailgating, the Saints in the Super Bowl–too much, really. I don’t yet have the coping skills necessary for that constant level of excitement. Cope by bike, I say. Continue reading

Twirling Dolls Stalled at Lafayette Square

Oh yeah, it’s carnival time. I woke up this morning excited for parades. Oshun rolled tonight, and I was excited to get back in the parade swing of things. And excited to have clear skies for riding my bike. I started the bike day with a ride up to visit the library to pick up a book that I’m quite certain will change things. I love that kind of anticipation. But I’m not sure how much time I’ll have to read in the next week or two, because IT’S CARNIVAL TIME! Continue reading

Do Not Enter Sign at Bayou St. John

S. texted me this morning, reporting she was in the mood for a bike ride. Ever happy to oblige such moods, I hopped on Rhoda (all decked out for Mardi Gras) and headed to Bayou St. John for a promised ride on Lafitte. Continue reading

Freeway Signs on the Broad Street Overpass

It’s Carnival time, people. I got up this morning and rode over to Mid-City to meet C. and P. for their annual bead-and-plush-throwapalooza, along with lots and lots of other people on this Saturday afternoon. I just got a few things. The checker asked me if I rode. Not in a parade, I said, but on my bike. Continue reading

Saints Fans Arriving at the Superdome for the NFC Championship

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but there was a football game in New Orleans today. The NFC championship against the Minnesota Vikings and Brett Favre? Winner goes to the Super Bowl? Yeah, that game. Continue reading

Sugar Bowl-Bound Fans on Canal and Camp

Last night ended with a popped tube on Magazine and Poydras, so today meant catching a ride downtown with my tube repair kit, pump, and 15mm wrench. It was surprisingly pleasurable to set up shop there on Magazine, even though I was in the way of the impressive flow of Sugar Bowl pedestrian traffic; I don’t know, it feels good to use public space in ways you’re not meant to. Continue reading

Beignet Debris at Cafe du Monde

I’m not usually a big fan of New Year’s Eve. It’s too much mandatory drinking and fun and dancing, and I like to be in charge of those things myself, no matter what the calendar says. But I headed out on my bike this evening, hell-bent on making a go of it this year. And man, did I have a good time. Continue reading

Saints Tailgating in the CBD

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but the New Orleans Saints are having a pretty good football season. They were undefeated, 13-0, going into tonight’s game versus the Dallas Cowboys. One of the very first things I learned as a child was to hate the Cowboys. As far my recall goes, my learning went like this: Yankees suck, never cross a picket line, hate the Dallas Cowboys. So yeah, I was rooting for the Saints. Continue reading

King Cakes at the Walgreens on St. Charles

I can’t get this picture to rotate the right way. That’s because I took it with my new cellular telephone (I hope the thief who swiped my old one has had a chance to make all his/her important calls), and I now have to learn how to use it. Perhaps after finals are over the students shall become the teachers. In the meantime, tilt your head and behold what I found at the Walgreens tonight. Continue reading

First Quarter of the Fourth Race at the Fairgrounds

It was a warm 74 degrees on a perfect New Orleans Sunday. I slept late, but headed out to the track to meet some friends to catch some racing. The streets were fairly empty, especially since the Saints don’t play until tomorrow night. Continue reading
