I don’t feel too hot today–I’ve got that icky feeling in the back of my throat that says something’s off. But it was such a beautiful day, and a beautiful day for a bike ride, so I sucked it up and went downtown to enjoy the sunshine and dry air and crowds at the New Orleans Bookfair and the Bywater Mirliton Festival. (I was running late–no time to stop at the Scandinavian Festival!) Continue reading

Train Crossing at St. Claude and Press
I know, I’m like a broken record, but the weather is so flipping beautiful here this week. I rode around running errands this afternoon, in a skirt and tank top and sandals as my shoulders baked in the sun. In November. Man, I love living here! Those hot and humid summer months–which I also enjoy–are worth it for these pleasant fall days. Continue reading
Ship, Train, and Car at Poland and Chartres
It was a beautiful day in New Orleans today, perfect for riding around, which is exactly what I did after meeting D. for lunch in the Marigny. I rode out on St. Claude. That bike lane is still my favorite place to ride in the city. I turned on Poland and rode up and down, trying to figure out what that building was (Poland Scrap Metal) and marveling at the strangely out of place post office. Continue reading
Holy Trinity Church in the Bywater (Amendment: Marigny–these neighborhoods are all so small!)
Today’s ride took me down to the Marigny in search of a comfortable coffee shop to get some reading done. But my favorite coffee shop is on vacation! The nerve! Actually, I’m glad folks here take real vacations. We don’t do enough of that. Continue reading
Train Tracks and Ships on Chartres and Louisa
Today was one of those perfect New Orleans Sundays, surprisingly cool and dry, blue sky, light breeze. It started with a lazy morning at home followed by a ride down to the Treme for brunch with friends, sipping champagne on the balcony in J. and S.’s newly-installed hammock. I lay there, staring up at the sky, listening to friends chatter and laugh, and felt damn lucky to be alive. Continue reading
Trains at Galvez and St. Ferdinand
I took Jack out for a ride this afternoon, and it felt so, so good. It was either a little bit cooler or I’ve acclimated, and that made biking around town much more pleasant. I planned to ride down to the Marigny hoping to find the bike shop open for a payday treat, but got sidetracked Uptown, watching a movie shoot. Continue reading
Domino Sugar Refinery in Chalmette
I woke up to birthday phone calls and an empty day stretched out before me. Yes, it was time for a bike ride. I decided to take Jack out for a tour, wherever she chose to go. We rode down to the Bywater for lunch and the over to the Lower 9th to stop by Fats Domino’s house. Continue reading
Lining Up For Ice Cream at the Creole Creamery
Though I haven’t blogged in a few days, I have been on my bicycle. Yesterday I rode to Jazz Fest, and then later to a bar in the Bywater for more music. I took so many fantastic pictures of the jazztastic festival that I wanted to share, but by the time I got home, I was toast. Continue reading
Overgrown Lot and Decaying Fence at St. Philip and St. Claude
Today was hot and humid, a little reminder of what we’ll be in for as summer gets here. I love summertime in New Orleans, so I was happy to get out on a bike ride. I headed to Mid-City to meet up with a friend for a ride to the Bywater for lunch. I could feel the sun baking my back, and it sure was. I’ve got a bit of a sunburn, unfortunately. Continue reading
Easter Shoppers at Winn-Dixie
I had a great bike riding day yesterday. I rode down to the Quarter to see one more panel at the PCA conference, back Uptown for drinks with friends, back down to the Bywater for wine with friends, to the Quarter for some dancing, and then back home. I didn’t take any pictures, though. I just rode. It felt so good. Today the winds were up and the weather was bad and the tornado warnings were on. So naturally I went out on a bike ride. Continue reading
